The Ogun State government has trained 8,500 Teachers, Treated 780,657 School-Age Children In 6,000 Schools in the commemoration of
2019 world NTDs day.
According to Commissioner of health, Tomi Coker, Neglected Tropical Diseases NTDs is a group of infectious diseases usually associated with poverty and are found mainly in the tropics.
She said globally about 1.5 billion individuals across 149 countries are affected by the diseases with 40% of them found in the sub-Saharan Africa, a quarter of which is Nigeria.
"Approximately 3 million are at risk in Ogun State of which 1.4 million are school children and several thousands battling with the complications of the diseases" said Coker
" Ogun State is endemic with 6 NTDs these are Onchocereciasis, Lymphatic Filariasis, Schistosomiasis, Soil transmitted helminthes, leprosy and buruli ulcer, with support from our parthers 'Evidence Action' and in collaboration with Ministry of Education and SUBEB, Ogun state NTDs Control Programme trained 8,500 trachers and treated 780,657 school-aged children in 6,000 schools in 2019" Coker added.
Speaking further, She said, with the support of UNICEF in collaboration with the endemic LGA staffs and community development association, over 5,000 community direct distributors were trained and two million, eight hundred and seventy four thousand, three hundred and eighty nine people across 18 endemic were treated in 2018.
She assured the public of media appearance to sensitize schools and communities through LGA NTD teams and school health workers and also awareness walk within the remote areas.
