Meet The Politicians Who Still Drive Their Old Cars After Becoming Governor

Despite entitle to official cars, some Nigerian Governors have preferred to retain their former vehicles even in office.

This strange practice is in a bid to save the treasury money which will be redirected towards the development of the State.

Who are these Governors?

1.     Seyi Makinde

Governor Seyi Makinde has not spent a kobo from Oyo State government account to purchase new cars since assuming office.

After seven months in power, Engr. Seyi Makinde told some residents in the State he still maintains his personal car as a Governor.

The reason why Governor Seyi Makinde preferres to use his private car in office was to avoid spending billions on new vehicles.

“When we started, Oyo State’s finances were in a bad state. At the moment, I still use my personal car. We have not bought any car for the officials, this will cost billions,” - Seyi Makinde

As part of his austere style of governance, the Governor has refused to spend a dime of Christmas decoration in Oyo State last year.

"Oyo State government didn’t spend 1 kobo on the Christmas decorations." The decorations seen was funded from the usual ‘Christmas gift’ to the Governor. He explained last week.

2.     AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq

Another State Governor who chose to drives his old personal cars after being sworn in May 2019 is AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State.

In December, Alhaji AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, made this known while making clearing the air about sponsoring a music concert by Star Wiz Kid.

The Governor not only announced that State funds were not used to sponsor the concert that featured the Musician, he also revealed that he still use his cars.

In October 2019, the Governor was accused of buying bullet-proof cars for his wife. AbdulRazaq has since denied the claims as nothing but downright falsehood.

“As of today, I still drive my personal cars as official cars. I bought them before I was sworn in..Although the law allows me to buy such vehicles, it is not a priority for me. We need to fix our state first.” - AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq

It is reported that His Excellency AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq attends state functions in a Hilux Van. The frugal Governor is not known for luxury in Kwara State.

Some Governors keep more than 2 dozen of jeeps, and about half a dozen of saloon in their convoy as official cars. The cost of purchase and maintenance is very high.
