Trigger Happy Policeman To Face Murder Charge After Killing 39-year-old Man In Lagos

Hakeem Odumosu, the Lagos state commissioner of police, has ordered the arrest of Sergeant Lukmon Akanbi over the murder of one Ramon Babatunde Adeniyi.

Sergeant Akanbi with the identification number F/No 448407 is attached to Victoria Island Police Station.

He was accused of shooting of Adeniyi, a 39-year-old man, on Friday, December 27, around Eko Atlantic Victoria Island, Lagos.

According to the statement made available to Legit.ng by the police spokesperson, DSP Bala Elkana, there was a fracas between Sergeant Akanbi and the victim.

Elkana stated the police officer then pulled the trigger of his pistol on the unarmed civilian which is against the professional standards on the use of Firearms.

The police officer was arrested and detained at the Provost Department, Command Headquarters, Ikeja.

He was subsequently arraigned before Adjudicating Officer on three counts charge of Discreditable Conduct contrary to Paragraph E (3) First Schedule, Unlawful and Unnecessary Exercise of Authority contrary to Paragraph Q (2), and Damage to Articles contrary to Paragraph D (1), Police Act and Regulations, Cap 370 LFN 1990.

Akanbi was found guilty of all the charges and was dismissed from the Nigeria Police. He has also been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba for prosecution in conventional Court.

The commissioner of police condoles with family and friends of the deceased person and assured them that justice will prevail.

The DSS operative attached to a VIP's residence in the town had attempted to shoot a cow running away from the house, The Nation reports.

The victim identified as Onyeocha Umuokwu was a domestic staff to one Engr Emeka Eze.
