Share This

The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has been banned from operating within Agege Local Government Area of Lagos state.

Council Chairman Alh. Ganiyu Kola Egunjobi has signed a letter to notify the NURTW of the ban.

According to the council, it took this drastic measure to put an end to the alleged conversion of its streets and markets in the area to motor parks by the union.

It further accused the union of perpetrating violence and causing nuisance and gridlock.

Part of the letter reads;

” It is the Resolution of the Executive Committee of Agege Local Government at its meeting held on the 12 of December 2019 that operation of Parks by the National Union of Road Transport Workers within all markets and streets in Agege Local Government is prohibited due to the following reasons;

1.      “The operation of parks within designated streets and markets are causing a breach of peace and unhealthy conflict in our community.”

2.      “The various parks on designated streets in Agege Local Government are causing traffic jam on the affected streets thus congesting our roads.”

3.      “The activities of the NURTW within Agege local government streets and markets is one that always leads to trouble thus encouraging cultists alike to go about with dangerous weapons.’

4.      “The markets within Agege Local government isn’t meant to serve as parks. Hence, all commercial vehicles should vacate all market premises.”
