A new Olowo of Owo, Ondo State, has emerged. He is Prince Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye, who was elected by the senior Omo-Olowos (kingmakers), having polled 14 out of 15 votes during the electoral process held at the ancient Olowo’s palace in Owo.

He defeated 18 other princes who contested for the traditional Owo stool.

The kingmakers of Owo Kingdom (Omo Olowo) elected Gbadegesin, a civil servant from Ogunoye ruling house. Until his election, the Oba-elect was Director of Finance and Administration, Government House, Akure.

With his successful election, Gbadegesin would be crowned as the 32nd Olowo of Owo.

The Olowo stool became vacant following the passage of Oba Victor Folagbade Olateru Olagbegi in April this year.

No fewer than 18 princes from the Elewuokun Ruling House indicated interest to occupy the exalted position, while 15 kingmakers voted on behalf of the people of the ancient town.

The contestants include princes from the Ogunoye royal lineage, which includes Gbadegesin.

Addressing the gathering, President of the Council of Senior Omolowos (kingmakers), Kofoworola Oladoyinbo, who commended the selection process, urged the contestants to join hands with the Oba-elect to move the town forward.

“I want to appeal to the Oba-elect to be magnanimous in victory and extend hands of fellowship to other contestants. All of you are princes of Owoland,” he added.

In his remarks after the exercise, the Olowo-elect promised to ensure peace reigns in the town.
