Tension As Hausa And Yoruba Youths Clash In Ilorin

Police in Kwara have arrested not fewer than seven people following a clash between Hausaand Yoruba youths in Sango area of Ilorin, the state capital on Sunday, April 1. 

Vanguard reports that at least five people were reportedly admitted into a private hospital in Ilorin after the clash. Kwara state Police Command confirmed the clash and the following arrest of seven suspects in connection with the incident.

The report said trouble started late on Saturday, March 31 when a Yoruba man returning from work was allegedly attacked by some Hausa boys that sell scrap metal because the man refused to allow them scavenge in his domain. The Yoruba youths in the area retaliated with an attack on the Hausa youths on Sunday, causing injury to five people who were hospitalized.

The Kwara police Command spokesman Ajayi Okasanmi, confirming the incident on Sunday, said: “The clash started last night (Saturday) as a result of a misunderstanding between a group of Hausa boys and some Yoruba boys that resulted in a fight.”

He also revealed that combined forces of policemen from the E, A and B divisions and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps were drafted immediately to the area to restore law and order.

Okasanmi revealed further that seven people were arrested in connection with the incident. Two of them who sustained injuries were hospitalised while the remaining five are in police custody.
