Pandemonium in Sango-Ota as youths, traders rally against Customs ‘extortion’

— 22nd February 2017
There was violent protest in Sango-Ota area of Ado Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State Today.

Amebof9ja gathered that vehicular and
human traffic along the ever-busy
Abeokuta-Lagos Expressway was
paralyzed, as rioting youths and traders at
Sango market were said to have blocked
both sides of the road at Ota, just before
the bridge.

Unconfirmed reports say that the youths
and traders were protesting over what they
called ‘invasion’ of the market by men of
the Nigeria Customs Service.
They claimed that the Customs men went
to some stalls early Wednesday morning,
forced them opened and evacuated bags of
rice, and took them away in their vehicles.
Efforts to reach the state Police Public
Relations, Abimbola Oyeyemi, on the crisis
proved abortive as he did not pick the calls
made to his telephone line.
Motorists and commuters were stranded, as
some of them made frantic efforts to seek
alternative routes.
