ABEOKUTA—Electioneering campaign of All Progressives Congress, APC, in Ogun State, yesterday, ended on a tragic note as a Police escort attached to a member of the House of Representatives (names withheld) allegedly shot dead a mother of two.
He also gravely injured several persons, including a young man at Erunbe in Ago-Oko area of Abeokuta.
An eyewitness told Vanguard that the bullets from the escort’s gun hit the woman, identified as Taiwo, popularly called Mama Ola, who was in her kiosk, where she sold petty items.
Vanguard gathered that another victim of the gunshots was a young man who was injured in the face by the bullets.
He died on the way to the hospital.
When Vanguard visited the woman’s kiosk in the community, blood stains were seen splattered in the gutter in front of her shop.
Her 16-year-old daughter, Halimat, who could not hold back her tears, explained that she was in the shop with her mother at the time, and was assisting her to pack some bunches of banana when she heard people shouting “Iya Ola, Iya Ola.”
Halimah further explained that when she turned in her mother’s direction, she saw her lying on the floor in front of the shop and in a pool of her blood.
It was learned that the National Assembly member, who was seeking re-election on the ticket of APC, had gone to the community with his supporters for campaign, when the incident happened.
A witness said the tragedy occurred when his police orderly was trying to clear the way for the lawmaker, as the orderly shot twice from the open roof of an SUV carrying the National Assembly member, which hit the victims.
