Nollywood actress Ruth Kadiri has urged couples to resist societal pressure to stage extravagant weddings, warning that such ceremonies can place emotional and financial strain on marriages.

In a video shared on Instagram, Kadiri argued that the expectations surrounding big weddings often create stress that lingers beyond the celebration.

“I do think that big weddings put pressure on couples. It puts pressure on the marriage itself,” she said.

She questioned why couples who had enjoyed stable relationships suddenly face fear and uncertainty after elaborate ceremonies, suggesting that the demands of wedding planning can alter attitudes toward marriage.

Kadiri encouraged simpler arrangements, advising couples to focus on traditional and legal requirements, invite only close family and friends, and avoid multiple ceremonies driven by societal expectations.

She warned that lavish celebrations expose couples to unnecessary scrutiny and can distract from the essence of marriage.

Beyond weddings, the actress called for a broader shift in societal attitudes, criticizing the financial and emotional burdens placed on young people by parents and extended families.

She highlighted the particular pressure on firstborn children, who are often expected to shoulder family responsibilities.

“Success means different things to different people,” she noted, stressing that fulfillment should not be measured solely by wealth or public approval but by personal happiness and peace of mind.

Kadiri urged Nigerians to prioritize their well-being over societal validation, reminding couples that the strength of a marriage lies in the relationship itself, not the grandeur of the wedding.
