Eyelash extensions and false eyelashes may create fuller eyes, but experts have warned that frequent use could cause irritation, infections, eyelash loss and other eye complications.

A study presented at the 44th Congress of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons examined 345 women aged 16 to 28. Almost one-quarter had used eyelash extensions, while 58 per cent had them applied every three to four weeks. Nearly half, 47.6 per cent, reported discomfort, redness, tearing or itching after the procedure.

Among women who had undergone the procedure at least 10 times, 85 per cent showed signs of meibomian gland dysfunction, which can affect the oil needed to keep the eyes hydrated.

Researchers also examined eyelash samples from 25 regular users and found Demodex folliculorum mites in all but one. Eighteen showed irritation, including itching, redness, swelling and scaly skin around the lash line.

A separate study of 400 female undergraduates at the University of Benin found that 54 per cent had experienced at least one side effect from artificial eyelashes. Common complaints included itching, lashes being pulled out, heavy eyelids and red eyes.

Professor Charles Bekibele, an ophthalmologist at UCH, Ibadan, said complete hygiene during application and removal could not always be guaranteed.

Cornea surgeon Dr Bade Ogundipe warned that lash glue entering the eye could scratch the cornea, while chemicals in some adhesives may cause severe irritation. Serious damage could lead to corneal scarring and affect vision.

He added that repeated application and removal could weaken natural lash follicles, causing thinning and lash loss, while poor hygiene could increase the risk of infections.

Dr Tinuade Ajani said artificial lashes may create conditions that encourage eyelash mites to multiply, potentially causing persistent itching and excessive watering. She advised people with unexplained irritation to consult an eye specialist rather than using chemical treatments around the eyes.
