The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted City University Abuja an operational licence, allowing the private institution to begin academic activities and admit its first postgraduate students for the 2026/2027 academic session.
The licence was formally presented to the university’s promoters in Abuja on July 24, 2026, officially transitioning the institution from a proposed university to a fully licensed postgraduate institution.
NUC Executive Secretary, Prof. Abdullahi Ribadu, said the university had fulfilled all regulatory requirements and urged its management to uphold the Commission’s standards on quality assurance and academic excellence.
Speaking on behalf of the promoters, a member of the Board of Trustees, Uzoechina Agu, thanked the NUC for its rigorous licensing process and pledged that the university would prioritise academic excellence, innovation, integrity and accountability.
Agu said the institution was ready to commence operations, with modern facilities, qualified staff and student support systems in place for its pioneer students.
With the approval, City University Abuja becomes one of Nigeria’s licensed private universities and is set to expand access to postgraduate education in the Federal Capital Territory.
