NSC Cancels NFF Election, Plans Three-Month Normalisation Committee

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has cancelled the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Elective Congress scheduled for September 27, 2026, in Lafia, Nasarawa State, in a move that could trigger a major restructuring of Nigerian football.

The decision has effectively halted the electoral process that was expected to produce a new NFF executive, with the incumbent president, Ibrahim Gusau, seeking a second term.

Reports indicate that the NSC is preparing to constitute a three-month normalisation committee to oversee the affairs of the NFF and work towards fresh elections after proposed reforms to the federation’s administration and electoral process.

The intervention follows months of controversy surrounding the proposed NFF election, including complaints from stakeholders over the electoral guidelines and allegations that the process could favour the incumbent administration.

The development also comes shortly after the Super Falcons failed to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, following their elimination by South Africa in the African playoff.

Reports further suggest that the NSC has been engaging with FIFA and CAF over the proposed intervention, apparently in an effort to avoid sanctions arising from concerns about government interference in football administration.

The proposed normalisation committee would be expected to stabilise the NFF, address outstanding governance issues and prepare the federation for a fresh electoral process.

However, former Super Eagles forward Victor Ikpeba has warned against rushing into the establishment of a normalisation committee, urging caution over the possible consequences for Nigerian football.

The cancellation therefore marks a significant turning point in the administration of Nigerian football, with a major leadership and structural shake-up now looming at the NFF.
