The Federal Government on Thursday inspected the ongoing assembly of 10,000 electric vehicles destined for distribution across the six North-East states at a plant in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
Minister of Regional Development Abubakar Momoh, who led the inspection, said the vehicles comprising buses, tricycles and taxis along with supporting charging infrastructure, would serve both rural communities and urban areas in the region once completed.
The project is managed by the North-East Development Commission and was approved by the Federal Executive Council.
“From what we have seen today, I can say that I am very much impressed because nearly all the 10,000 e-vehicles and tricycles are on the ground. They are already assembling them. We have also seen a number of e-taxis and buses. We are very much impressed,” Momoh told journalists after the visit.
He expressed confidence that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would be pleased with the progress and noted that the assembly process is already creating jobs for local people.
According to the minister, the Director of Operations indicated that completing the 10,000-unit target could provide employment opportunities for no fewer than 100,000 persons.
Momoh described the development as part of the transformation agenda of the current administration.
