US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz said Trump was allowing negotiations “some space” but stressed the president had not ruled out further action. “All options remain on the table,” he said.
Iran also announced it had paused its retaliatory attacks, raising hopes of easing tensions after nearly two weeks of intense exchanges that effectively collapsed the June ceasefire.
Waltz dismissed reports that the US military was running low on air defence missiles, insisting American forces remained fully equipped for the campaign.
Meanwhile, Iran and Oman held technical talks on managing the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route at the center of the conflict.
The fighting resumed after Iran attacked tankers in the Strait of Hormuz on July 13, prompting renewed US airstrikes and a naval blockade. Iran retaliated by targeting US military bases in the Middle East, while the conflict has pushed oil prices above $100 per barrel and heightened fears over global energy supplies.
Trump is expected to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Tuesday as diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation continue.
