Presidency To Obi: Your 2027 Presidential Bid Has Suffered A ‘PR Disaster’

The Presidency on Monday launched a scathing attack on the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi over his appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, describing the interview as a public relations disaster that exposed what it called “many lies” and political inconsistency.

In a strongly worded statement, the Presidentisl spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga said he stopped watching Obi’s interview after about 30 minutes, insisting the former Anambra State governor failed in his apparent attempt to revive what it described as his “ebbing 2027 presidential ambition.”

The statement accused Obi of making false comparisons between his political journey and that of President Bola Tinubu, arguing that while Tinubu had remained on a consistent progressive ideological path throughout his political career, Obi had repeatedly switched political parties in pursuit of personal ambition.

According to the Presidency, Tinubu moved from the Social Democratic Party (SDP) to the Alliance for Democracy (AD), later helping to build the Action Congress (AC), Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), before playing a central role in the merger that produced the All Progressives Congress (APC).

It maintained that Tinubu remained within the same ideological bloc despite party realignments, unlike Obi, who allegedly moved from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), then to the Labour Party and most recently to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

The Presidency further alleged that Obi had abandoned every political platform he joined instead of staying behind to rebuild them after electoral setbacks or internal crises.

“You do not build; you always want to reap where you did not sow,” the statement declared, adding that Obi would likely leave the NDC as well if it failed to hand him its presidential ticket.

The Presidency also accused Obi of betraying his commitment to APGA despite previously pledging loyalty to the party.

On the 2023 presidential election, the Presidency faulted Obi for maintaining that he was denied victory despite the Supreme Court’s dismissal of his petition challenging President Tinubu’s election.

It argued that Obi came third in the presidential poll and urged him to stop claiming he won the election.

“You lost, Peter. You didn’t win that election. You came third,” the statement said, insisting that Obi remained in denial more than three years after the Supreme Court upheld Tinubu’s victory.

The Presidency further claimed that Obi’s electoral performance was largely driven by support from his ethnic base and social media followers rather than nationwide political structures.

It concluded by urging the former presidential candidate to accept the outcome of the 2023 election and “stop dreaming of a victory that you never had.”

The latest remarks add to the growing political exchanges between the Presidency and Obi as political alignments intensify ahead of the 2027 general election.
