A Coalition of Civil Society Organizations for Good Governance has alleged that there are plans to trigger insecurity in Osun State ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship election in a bid to justify the declaration of a state of emergency.
Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos, the National Coordinator of the Coalition, Comrade Declan Ihekiare, and Secretary, Olalekan Johnson, claimed that credible intelligence suggested a coordinated plan to create unrest that could lead to the suspension of democratic governance in the state.
According to the coalition, the alleged objective of the plot is to remove the administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke and influence the outcome of the forthcoming governorship election.
The group also alleged that politically sponsored violence had already begun in parts of the state, claiming that thugs had attacked motor parks, disrupted commercial activities and created fear among residents.
It further alleged that some police officers had failed to act impartially by allegedly protecting political thugs instead of preventing violence.
The coalition accused the Osun State Police Command of failing to respond adequately to reports of political violence, urging security agencies to remain neutral and ensure the protection of lives and property throughout the election period.
The group, however, did not provide evidence to substantiate its allegations during the press conference.
Calling on the Federal Government, the coalition urged authorities to ensure that security agencies remained professional and impartial in the discharge of their duties and to resist any attempt to undermine constitutional governance.
It also appealed to political parties and their supporters to conduct their campaigns peacefully and avoid actions capable of inciting violence.
The coalition further called on the international community, including the United Nations, African Union, ECOWAS, European Union, the United States and the United Kingdom, to closely monitor developments in Osun State ahead of the election and support efforts to ensure a peaceful and credible electoral process.
The group said it was prepared to mobilise Nigerians through peaceful and lawful means against any attempt to subvert democracy or impose emergency rule in the state.
It also warned that individuals found to be involved in sponsoring or carrying out political violence should be held accountable under the law.
The coalition maintained that the people of Osun State should be allowed to freely elect their governor without intimidation, violence or unconstitutional interference.
