AWKA, Anambra State – The Election Petition Committee of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, NYCN, Anambra State Chapter has nullified the result of the council’s June 26, 2026 State Congress and declared Barr. Nonso Henry Nwaebili as the duly elected State Chairman.
Delivering judgment in Awka, the Committee set aside the earlier declaration of Mr. Ikechukwu Onuorah as winner of the election. The ruling followed a petition challenging the conduct and outcome of the congress, which the tribunal said was backed by evidence presented before it. After reviewing all submissions, the Committee held that the declaration of Mr. Onuorah could not stand in law and in equity.
The tribunal consequently declared Barr. Nwaebili, a legal practitioner, former Senior Special Assistant to the Anambra State Governor, and a prominent youth leader in the state, as the validly elected Chairman of NYCN Anambra. The Committee also directed the immediate issuance of a Certificate of Return to Barr. Nwaebili to enable him to assume office and commence the discharge of his duties without further delay.
According to the Committee, the decision was aimed at restoring confidence in the council’s internal democratic process and bringing closure to the dispute that trailed the June 26 congress. It noted that upholding due process was critical to strengthening the credibility of youth leadership structures in the state.
Supporters of Barr. Nwaebili who gathered at the venue described the judgment as a victory for justice, due process, and the rule of law. They expressed optimism that his leadership would bring inclusive, accountable, and visionary direction to youth affairs in Anambra. Many noted his track record in public service and grassroots mobilization as reasons they expect a new era of engagement for young people across the 21 local government areas.
Observers said the ruling comes at a significant time, amid renewed calls for greater youth participation in leadership within youth organizations. They referenced a recent resolution by the Anambra State House of Assembly urging all youth organizations in the state to strictly comply with the statutory 35-year age limit for aspirants seeking elective positions. Stakeholders argued that strict adherence to the age requirement would open more space for younger people to take up leadership roles and contribute meaningfully to governance.
The tribunal’s decision is also expected to strengthen youth-focused policies in Anambra, with stakeholders expressing hope that it will deepen support for youth empowerment, leadership development, innovation, and community engagement programs across the state.
Barr. Nwaebili, who has been active in youth advocacy and community development, served previously as Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on youth matters. He is known for initiatives aimed at mentoring, skills development, and mobilizing young people for civic participation.
The NYCN Anambra State Chapter has called on all members, stakeholders, and partners to rally behind the new leadership as it works to unify the council and advance the collective interests of Anambra youths.
