A 28-year-old woman has narrated how her menstrual period allegedly saved her from being r@ped after she and other were att@cked by suspected armed robbers along the Aawe–Iwo Road in Afijio Local Government Area of Oyo State.
Speaking to Saturday Tribune, the woman said she, her husband and a 20-year-old apprentice were returning from a market when armed men barricaded the road, forcing their vehicle to stop before att@cking them.
According to her, the assailants chased her into the bush after collecting their bag containing cash and other valuables. She alleged that they attempted to s+xually as+ault her but abandoned the act after discovering she was menstruating.
“They then started dragging me deeper into the bush.”
“They attempted to have s+xual intercourse with me, but I was menstruating.”
She said the suspects be@t her with a herding stick, tore her leggings and only let her go after one of them was instructed to lead her out of the bush.
“When they discovered I was menstruating, one of them was instructed to lead me out of the bush. He abandoned me after taking me some distance, and I eventually emerged by the roadside, where I saw hunters and vigilantes approaching.”
The victim added that she was later reunited with others after the hunters and vigilantes searched the area, and was informed shortly afterwards that some of the suspected attackers had been arrested.
The Oyo State Police Command subsequently arrested four suspects in connection with the r%bbery. Police said the victims identified the suspects during an identification parade, while investigations into the case are ongoing.
