GUSAU – Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has taken a major step toward overhauling the state's education sector by signing a series of landmark Executive Orders aimed at strengthening school governance, improving education financing, enhancing safety, and raising learning standards across public schools.
The governor also flagged off the distribution of the National Curriculum to public schools during a high-level stakeholders' meeting held on Tuesday at the Government House in Gusau.
The reforms, described as one of the most comprehensive education policy packages in the state's history, establish a robust governance framework covering education financing, school protection, classification, quality assurance, health services, security, and institutional accountability.
According to a statement issued by the governor's spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, the Executive Orders are designed to address longstanding challenges in the education sector while positioning Zamfara to deliver quality, inclusive and globally competitive education.
Among the key areas covered by the reforms are improved school governance and operations, school feeding programmes, student welfare, transportation safety, implementation of safe-school protocols, regulation of graduation ceremonies, unified examinations, school health services, merit-based appointments of school leaders, inclusive education policies, and the expansion of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), as well as digital education.
Speaking during the ceremony, Governor Lawal reaffirmed his administration's commitment to rebuilding the education sector, describing education as the foundation of sustainable development and national progress.
According to him, education goes beyond being a social service, serving as a powerful tool for combating poverty, promoting peace, improving security, driving economic growth, and preparing young people for success in an increasingly knowledge-based global economy.
"Education is the most powerful instrument for reducing poverty, promoting peace, strengthening security, stimulating economic growth and preparing future generations to compete in an increasingly knowledge-driven world," the governor said.
He explained that the Executive Orders represent a coordinated and long-term strategy rather than isolated policy directives.
"Today, we are turning that commitment into concrete institutional reforms by signing and presenting these Executive Orders. These are not isolated directives. Together, they constitute a comprehensive governance framework designed to strengthen school administration, improve accountability, protect public educational assets, enhance financing, promote safety, raise educational standards, improve learning outcomes and prepare our children for the demands of the twenty-first century," he added.
Governor Lawal observed that previous education reforms had focused largely on infrastructure development through the construction of classrooms and laboratories but noted that physical facilities alone cannot guarantee quality education.
He stressed that effective governance, strong institutions, qualified teachers, improved learning standards, and accountability mechanisms are equally critical to achieving lasting educational transformation.
Also speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Abdulmalik Abubakar Gajam, highlighted the importance of collective responsibility in driving sustainable reforms.
He noted that successful education systems are built on active collaboration among governments, teachers, parents, communities, traditional institutions, development partners and the private sector.
Gajam assured stakeholders that the newly introduced reforms would move beyond policy formulation to deliver measurable improvements across schools in the state.
"These reforms will not end with policy documents. They will be reflected in safer schools, stronger governance, healthier learners, improved teaching, better educational outcomes, and greater public confidence in our education system," he stated.
Education stakeholders at the meeting welcomed the initiatives, expressing optimism that the reforms would significantly improve access to quality education, strengthen accountability, and equip learners with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in the modern economy.
The rollout of the National Curriculum alongside the new governance framework is expected to accelerate the implementation of education policies across Zamfara's public schools while laying the foundation for a safer, more inclusive and better-performing education system.
The latest reforms underscore Governor Lawal's broader commitment to repositioning education as a strategic driver of human capital development and sustainable socio-economic growth in Zamfara State.
