BENIN CITY — The All Progressives Congress (APC) has recorded a landslide victory in the Edo State local government elections, winning all 18 chairmanship seats and the 192 councillorship positions contested across the state's 18 local government areas and 192 political wards.
The Chairman of the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC), Jonathan Aifuobhokhan, announced the results on Sunday in Benin City after the completion of the collation process by returning officers.
Declaring the outcome of the election, Aifuobhokhan said the exercise was conducted in accordance with the provisions of the Edo State Local Government Electoral Law, 2022, as amended in 2026, and other relevant electoral guidelines.
According to him, accreditation of voters, voting, sorting of ballots, counting, collation of results and declaration of winners were carried out in compliance with the law.
He explained that returning officers completed the collation of results at both the ward and local government levels before declaring the successful candidates in their respective jurisdictions.
"Based on the official results declared by the returning officers, the commission hereby declares that the APC won the 18 local government chairmanship seats and all the 192 councillorship positions contested in the election," Aifuobhokhan stated.
However, the EDSIEC chairman did not provide a detailed breakdown of the votes scored by the participating political parties, nor did he disclose the total number of valid votes cast during the election.
The comprehensive victory gives the APC control of all elected local government councils in the state, marking one of the most decisive electoral outcomes in Edo's local government political history.
Aifuobhokhan commended the commission's returning officers for what he described as their professionalism, neutrality and commitment to due process throughout the election.
He acknowledged that a few operational challenges were experienced in some locations but maintained that the issues were minor and did not substantially affect either the conduct of the poll or the credibility of the results.
