ABEOKUTA — Stakeholders from across the education, security, and community development sectors converged in Abeokuta for a high-level School Security Summit aimed at strengthening safety measures in schools and creating a more secure learning environment for children across Ogun State.
The summit, hosted by the Abeokuta North Local Government and organized by the Ogun State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, provided a strategic platform for deliberations on practical solutions to emerging security challenges affecting educational institutions and communities.
Addressing participants at the event, a prominent government official emphasized the collective responsibility of all stakeholders in safeguarding the future of the younger generation. He noted that ensuring the safety of schools goes beyond physical security measures and requires the active involvement of parents, educators, community leaders, and security agencies.
According to him, the family remains the bedrock of every peaceful and progressive society. He therefore urged parents to play a more active role in raising responsible, disciplined, and morally upright children who can contribute positively to society.
“Strong family values are essential to building safe communities. Parents must take deliberate steps to guide their children and instill in them the virtues of discipline, integrity, and respect for others,” he said.
The official also charged students to embrace peaceful conduct and responsible behavior both within and outside the school environment. He stressed that discipline and good character are critical ingredients for personal success and national development.
Participants at the summit discussed the growing need for collaboration between schools, communities, and security agencies in preventing security threats and protecting educational facilities. Experts at the gathering highlighted the importance of intelligence gathering, early warning systems, and community engagement as effective tools for enhancing school security.
In his remarks, the official called on residents to support government efforts by providing timely and credible information that could assist security agencies in preventing criminal activities and other threats to public safety.
He further cautioned members of the public against the spread of unverified information and misinformation, warning that false reports often create unnecessary panic, heighten tensions, and undermine peace and security efforts.
“Security is everyone’s responsibility. Citizens must be vigilant and cooperate with relevant authorities by sharing useful information while avoiding the dissemination of rumors capable of causing fear and confusion,” he stated.
The summit attracted education administrators, school proprietors, teachers, security personnel, parents, traditional leaders, community representatives, and youth organizations, all of whom reaffirmed their commitment to fostering safer schools and communities.
Participants agreed that sustained collaboration among government institutions, families, schools, and local communities is essential for protecting children and ensuring that learning takes place in an atmosphere free from fear and insecurity.
The event concluded with renewed calls for continuous stakeholder engagement, stronger community participation, and the implementation of proactive security measures to safeguard schools and secure the future of the next generation.
