Ibadan, June 14, 2026 — Popular broadcaster, philanthropist, and gubernatorial candidate of the Accord Party in Oyo State, Oriyomi Hamzat, has strongly denied allegations linking him to a police-wanted suspect, describing the claims as a calculated attempt to damage his reputation and derail his political ambition.

In a strongly worded statement released on Sunday, Hamzat reacted to reports circulating on social media that sought to associate him with Surajudeen Adio Babatunde, popularly known as "Surii Ilupeju," who is reportedly wanted by law enforcement authorities.

The Accord governorship candidate dismissed the allegations as "malicious," "mischievous," and politically motivated, insisting that he has never sponsored, protected, encouraged, or supported criminal activity in any form.

According to Hamzat, the effort to connect him to the alleged actions of another individual simply because of a previous relationship or acquaintance is unfair and misleading.

"Employment, acquaintance, or social interaction with a person does not confer knowledge of, or complicity in, every aspect of that person's private life," he stated.

The media personality, who has built a significant public profile through broadcasting and humanitarian interventions across Oyo State, maintained that his public record reflects a commitment to justice, accountability, and service to society.

He argued that attempts to portray him as responsible for the alleged criminal conduct of another person amount to guilt by association and represent a deliberate effort to misinform the public.

Respect for Law Enforcement

Hamzat emphasized his confidence in the professionalism of the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies, urging members of the public to allow investigators to carry out their responsibilities without interference or political manipulation.

He noted that criminal investigations should be left to law enforcement institutions rather than becoming tools for political propaganda.

"If any individual is declared wanted or is under investigation, the appropriate course of action is to allow law enforcement agencies to carry out their constitutional responsibilities without dragging innocent people into matters for political or personal reasons," he said.

The governorship hopeful further disclosed that he has consistently maintained a cooperative relationship with security agencies and would not hesitate to provide lawful assistance if required in any ongoing investigation.

Political Undertones

Observers view Hamzat's response as an indication of growing political tension ahead of future electoral contests in Oyo State, where political actors are increasingly positioning themselves for influence and public support.

In his statement, Hamzat accused unnamed individuals of engaging in character assassination instead of presenting verifiable facts, alleging that the controversy was designed to create a false narrative around his person and political aspirations.

"Their intention is obvious: to score cheap political points by creating a false narrative around my person and my aspiration to serve the good people of Oyo State," he declared.

He maintained that no amount of blackmail or false accusations would distract him from pursuing his vision for the state.

Call for Public Discernment

Appealing directly to residents of Oyo State, Hamzat urged the public to critically evaluate information circulating on social media and avoid being influenced by unverified claims.

He expressed confidence that the people of the state possess the wisdom to distinguish between factual information and politically motivated propaganda.

The broadcaster-turned-politician reaffirmed his commitment to advancing policies focused on welfare, security, economic development, and good governance.

"I remain focused on the task of building a better Oyo State and will continue to uphold the values of integrity, accountability, and service to humanity that have defined my life and career," he said.

Looking Ahead

As discussions surrounding the controversy continue, political analysts say the incident highlights the growing role of social media narratives in shaping public perception and the increasing challenge faced by public figures in managing reputational attacks in the digital age.

For now, Hamzat has firmly rejected any connection to the alleged criminal activities of the wanted suspect and insists that the truth will prevail over what he describes as a coordinated smear campaign.

Whether the controversy fades or evolves into a larger political issue remains to be seen, but the latest development has once again brought the debate over accountability, political rivalry, and responsible public discourse to the forefront of Oyo State's political landscape.
