Governor Dapo Abiodun on Monday joined an array of distinguished Nigerians to celebrate elder statesman Reuben Fasoranti as he marked his 100th birthday anniversary in a grand ceremony that highlighted his enduring legacy of patriotism, democratic advocacy, and service to the nation.
The centenary celebration, attended by prominent political leaders, traditional rulers, statesmen, and members of the diplomatic community, served as a moment of reflection on the remarkable contributions of the nonagenarian to Nigeria’s socio-political development and the advancement of democratic ideals.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was represented at the event by Vice President Kashim Shettima, a gesture that underscored the national importance of the celebration and the immense respect Pa Fasoranti commands across political and ethnic divides.
As part of activities marking the milestone birthday, a bridge named in honour of the revered nationalist was commissioned in recognition of his lifelong dedication to leadership, justice, and nation-building. The project was described by guests as a fitting tribute to a man whose influence has shaped generations of political thought and progressive activism in Nigeria.
Speaking at the event, Governor Abiodun described the celebration as a historic occasion that honoured a life defined by integrity, courage, and unwavering commitment to humanity.
The Ogun State governor paid glowing tribute to Pa Fasoranti, describing him as one of Nigeria’s foremost voices of justice, equity, and progressive governance whose contributions to the country’s democratic evolution remain invaluable.
According to him, the elder statesman’s steadfast commitment to democracy, good governance, and national development has continued to inspire leaders and citizens across the country.
Governor Abiodun further commended the centenarian’s consistency in championing fairness, unity, and true federalism, even during some of the most challenging periods in Nigeria’s history.
“Pa Fasoranti’s life remains a shining example of patriotism, integrity, and purposeful leadership. His courage, wisdom, and dedication to the Yoruba cause and national unity will continue to inspire generations yet unborn,” the governor stated.
Many dignitaries at the event also lauded the elder statesman for his role in promoting democratic values and strengthening the socio-political fabric of the country through decades of principled leadership and advocacy.
Born in 1926, Pa Fasoranti has remained one of the most respected voices in Nigeria’s political landscape and a leading figure in the Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere. Over the years, he has earned widespread admiration for his advocacy for justice, restructuring, and good governance.
The centenary celebration concluded with goodwill messages, cultural displays, and prayers for the continued health and peace of the elder statesman, whose legacy many described as deeply woven into the history of modern Nigeria.
