Youth participation in politics has been described as a vital ingredient for strengthening democratic governance and ensuring sustainable development in Nigeria.
This was the central message delivered during a Ramadan lecture organized by the Ogun Youth Advocate For Social Development (OGYADS), where stakeholders emphasized the need for young people to play more active roles in shaping the nation’s political landscape.
The lecture, themed “The Importance of Youth Participation in Politics,” was delivered by Islamic scholar and guest lecturer, Imam Sheriff Adebare Moruf, who holds a Bachelor’s degree in Education in Religious and Peace Studies.
In his presentation, Imam Adebare stressed that the involvement of youths in politics brings fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and renewed energy that can significantly transform governance in the modern democratic era. According to him, the dynamism and creativity of young people are essential for addressing contemporary societal challenges.
He noted that democracy in the 21st century requires the active engagement of the younger generation, urging youths not to shy away from political processes but to contribute meaningfully to policy-making and leadership.
“Active participation of youths in politics strengthens democracy and fosters inclusive governance,” he said, adding that when young people are involved in decision-making processes, it helps build stronger social identity and promotes policies that reflect the aspirations of the larger population.
The President of the organization, Comrade Oluseyi Alamu, in his remarks, said the lecture was organized as part of OGYADS’ commitment to youth enlightenment, leadership development, and civic engagement across Ogun State.
He emphasized that the organization aims to encourage young people to become responsible citizens who contribute positively to governance and national development.
Also, Alhaji Akeem Ademolake urged the youths across Nigeria to get their permanent voters card, saying it is the only way they can vote for their preferred candidates come 2027, he also said the youths should shun social vices and use their energy on something profitable.
The event attracted several dignitaries and youth leaders from across the state. Among those present were Alhaji Akeem Ademolake, who represented Ambassador Sarafa Tunji Isola; Oloye Akolawole Shoremi, Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) in Ogun State; and Hon. Lawal Abdulghani Abidemi Mayegun, Supervisor for Works and Housing in Abeokuta South.
Also in attendance were the Supervisor for Information in Abeokuta South, Waheed Ameryso, alongside representatives of various youth associations across the state.
Speakers at the event commended OGYADS for creating a platform that promotes dialogue, enlightenment, and youth empowerment, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan.
They urged young people to take advantage of such initiatives to deepen their understanding of governance and prepare themselves for leadership roles in the future.
The Ramadan lecture concluded with a renewed call for Nigerian youths to remain proactive, responsible, and committed to contributing positively to democratic governance and societal development.
