Abeokuta — A cloud of grief and controversy has descended on Ogun State following the death of a young National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Victoria Ariyo, under circumstances that have sparked outrage, ethical concerns, and a full-scale police investigation.
Ariyo, who was serving in Abeokuta South Local Government Area, reportedly died on Tuesday after suffering complications linked to a terminated pregnancy. The official at the center of the storm, Mr. Abass Olalekan, who serves as the Local Government Inspector (LGI) for Abeokuta South, is currently in police custody. He is being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) headquarters in Eleweran as investigators work to unravel the circumstances surrounding the young woman’s death.
Sources close to the case allege that Olalekan was romantically involved with Ariyo, a relationship said to have resulted in pregnancy. Adding to the tension is the fact that this is the second reported death of a corps member in Abeokuta South within a little over a month. In an earlier incident, another corps member, Adeleye Mary, died under circumstances that authorities have yet to fully clarify. The recurrence of such tragedies has raised alarm among residents and stakeholders, with many questioning the safety and welfare of corps members in the area.
