KANΟ, Nigeria – In a strategic move to bridge the gap between law enforcement and the public, the Kano State Police Command has unveiled a robust lineup of community-centered events to commemorate the 2026 National Police Day.
Themed "Community Partnership: Building Trust," the celebrations aims to transition from traditional policing to a more collaborative security model. The initiative follows the overarching vision of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, emphasizing that a safer society is only possible when the police and citizens work in harmony.
Addressing a press briefing on Friday, March 27, the Kano State Commissioner of Police highlighted that the festivities are designed to humanize the force and provide platforms for direct interaction with various demographics, from students to traders.
A Week of Action and Engagement
The activities are scheduled to kick off on Monday, March 30, with a double-header of social responsibility: a cleaning exercise in Fagge Local Government Area and a medical outreach program in the Dakata area. These events underscore the Command’s commitment to the physical well-being and environment of the residents they serve.
On Tuesday, March 31, the Command will take to the streets for a "Walkathon." The march will begin at Mandawari Quarters and pass through Dandago, Gidan Kankara, Mazaunar Tanko, and Sani Mainagge, concluding at the Tal’udu Flyover. This will be followed by a live interactive session on Dala FM Kano and a formal visit to the State’s Federal High Court.
Mid-week activities on Wednesday, April 1, will focus on the youth and sports, featuring an interactive session with students and staff of North-West University, followed by a high-energy football match at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kofar Mata.
The localized events will wrap up on Thursday, April 2, with a high-level roundtable involving Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Community Leaders (CLOs), alongside outreach visits to major motor parks and markets across the state.
Building a United Front
The Commissioner emphasized that the Police Officers Wives Association (POWA), the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), and various CSOs would be integral to these activities. Crucially, the celebration is not limited to the state capital; similar engagements will be held simultaneously across all Police Divisions and Area Commands within Kano State.
"We believe that the police and the community are partners in progress," the Commissioner stated. "Your trust and collaboration have been instrumental in our efforts to maintain peace. These activities are a demonstration of our commitment to working together to address security challenges and improve the quality of life for all residents."
The Grand Finale
While Kano celebrates locally, the national climax of the 2026 National Police Day will take place on April 7 at the Eagle Square Parade Ground in Abuja. IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu will lead dignitaries and stakeholders in a national commemoration of the force's service to the country.
The Kano State Command has extended a passionate invitation to community leaders, stakeholders, and the general public to participate in the scheduled events, reinforcing the message that a secure community is a collective responsibility.
