ABUJA, March 13, 2026 — The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening maternal and newborn healthcare services across Nigeria following the successful management of a rare and complex quadruplet delivery at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The development was disclosed by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in a statement issued on Friday, noting that the high-risk delivery involved Mrs. Mufiat Olateju, who was referred to the tertiary hospital while already in labour.
According to the Ministry, the medical team at FMC Abeokuta swiftly mobilised to handle the complicated case and successfully delivered the four babies while stabilising the mother and the newborns.
The Honourable Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, was briefed on the situation and subsequently directed the management of the hospital to ensure that the mother and the babies receive comprehensive medical care and close monitoring.
In line with the directive, the hospital has begun providing specialised care for the mother and the newborns, including medical monitoring, counselling, and psychosocial support for the family.
The Ministry commended the professionalism and prompt response of the healthcare team at FMC Abeokuta, noting that deliveries involving multiple births—particularly quadruplets—require a high level of medical expertise, coordination, and specialised care.
Health officials explained that such pregnancies are considered medically demanding because they carry higher risks for both the mother and the babies, often requiring careful monitoring throughout pregnancy and specialised management during delivery.
The government also used the opportunity to highlight the importance of early and consistent antenatal care for pregnant women across the country.
Dr. Salako stressed that regular antenatal visits enable healthcare professionals to detect potential complications early, monitor the health of both mother and child, and prepare adequately for high-risk pregnancies.
“Regular antenatal visits enable health professionals to detect and manage potential complications early, improve pregnancy outcomes and ensure safer deliveries for both mothers and babies,” the Minister said.
Medical experts note that early antenatal registration is particularly crucial in detecting multiple pregnancies at an early stage, allowing healthcare providers to plan appropriately for delivery and ensure the availability of specialised care.
Pregnant women were therefore advised to register early for antenatal care at recognised health facilities and maintain regular contact with qualified health professionals throughout the course of their pregnancy.
The Ministry also emphasised the importance of postpartum counselling, including voluntary family planning services, as an essential part of maternal healthcare. Such services, it noted, help families make informed decisions about birth spacing and overall family wellbeing.
Reiterating its broader commitment to maternal and child health, the Ministry stated that the Federal Government continues to strengthen health systems nationwide through the deployment of skilled healthcare personnel, improved infrastructure, and expanded access to quality healthcare services.
The government said ongoing reforms in the health sector are aimed at improving maternal and newborn health outcomes and reducing preventable deaths among mothers and infants across Nigeria.
The successful quadruplet delivery at FMC Abeokuta, the Ministry added, underscores the importance of strengthening tertiary healthcare facilities and ensuring that pregnant women have access to timely and professional medical care.
