Senator Kaka Shehu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Special Duties, has strongly criticized a proposed ₦127 million allocation in the 2026 budget for the purchase of an SUV for the Presidential Villa, describing the amount as grossly inadequate and unacceptable.
Speaking during budget defense deliberations in Abuja on Wednesday, Senator Shehu argued that the sum falls far short of what is required to procure a suitable, security-compliant, and bulletproof vehicle for the Presidency.
He emphasized the need to uphold Nigeria's international image and avoid any embarrassment on the global stage."We are happy that even the villa is being treated equally with other ministers," Senator Shehu stated. "However, I will join my colleague in rejecting ₦127 million for SUV in the villa; it cannot buy even a bulletproof ‘tokunbo’."
The term "tokunbo" refers to fairly used imported vehicles, often second-hand, highlighting his view that the proposed funding would not secure a new or adequately protected high-end SUV befitting the Presidential Villa.
Senator Shehu stressed the importance of projecting Nigeria positively among nations, warning that an underfunded vehicle procurement could undermine the country's prestige, particularly in hosting foreign dignitaries.
The lawmaker's remarks, captured in video clips circulating on social media and reported by Arise TV, and have sparked widespread online discussion. Some commentators expressed surprise or sarcasm at the rejection, noting public concerns over government spending priorities amid economic hardships, while others acknowledged the security requirements for presidential vehicles.
