Properties worth millions of naira were destroyed on Sunday as a residential building was gutted by fire at Olorunsogo area of Abeokuta South Local Government Area, Ogun State.
The fire incident, which occurred around 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 1, 2026, threw residents of the area into panic as thick smoke and flames engulfed the building.
According to a family member of one of the occupants, identified as King Adachuckwu, the fire reportedly started from her husband’s room shortly after she stepped out of the house. She explained that she had locked her three children inside the building while she went out to look for food for them after they returned home earlier in the day.
On her return, she noticed flames coming from the building and immediately asked a neighbour if the fire was coming from their house, but there was no response. She said that upon opening the door, she was confronted by raging fire emanating from her husband’s room.
In a desperate attempt to save the situation, she tried to quench the fire with water, but the flames had already spread beyond control. She then focused on rescuing her children and successfully carried them out of the house unharmed Amebo Newspaper NG learnt.
Speaking with our correspondent, she disclosed that her husband was not at home at the time of the incident, as he had gone out to repair his mobile phone due to a faulty charging port. She added that efforts to reach him during the incident were unsuccessful.
Residents of the area commended the prompt response of fire fighters, who reportedly arrived at the scene in less than twenty minutes after being alerted. Fire service officials from both the Ogun State Fire Service and the Federal Fire Service worked together to contain the inferno.
At the time of filing this report, two fire trucks from the Ogun State Fire Service and one truck from the Federal Fire Service were on ground, and the fire had been completely brought under control.
Although no lives were lost in the incident, properties estimated to be worth millions of naira were destroyed. The cause of the fire had not been officially determined as of press time, while investigations were expected to commence to ascertain the source of the outbreak.
