Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, CON, has reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to building an inclusive, forward-looking, and globally competitive education system, describing education as the foundation of Lagos State’s long-term development agenda.
The Governor made this known on Tuesday during a meeting with the leadership team of Westerfield College, United Kingdom, at Lagos House, Marina, where discussions centred on the future of education in Lagos and opportunities for international collaboration that would expand global exposure for students in the state.
Governor Sanwo-Olu noted that the engagement provided a valuable platform to exchange ideas on how Lagos State can strengthen partnerships with reputable international institutions to equip students with skills and opportunities that align with global standards.
According to him, education occupies a central place in the administration’s THEMES+ agenda, stressing that it is not merely a policy item but a critical pillar for sustainable growth and human capital development.
“Education is the foundation of everything we are trying to build. I am firm in my belief that no child in Lagos State should be left behind or out of the classroom,” the Governor stated.
He disclosed that in the coming months, the state government will commission 36 newly constructed schools in Tolu, Ajegunle, as part of efforts to expand access to quality basic education. The initiative, he said, is aimed at ensuring that every child in Lagos has access to a conducive learning environment, complete with adequate infrastructure and furniture.
“We want every child to have a desk in a quality classroom,” he added.
Governor Sanwo-Olu also highlighted significant strides made in the tertiary education sector since the inception of his administration. He revealed that while Lagos State had only one state-owned university when his government assumed office, the number has now increased to three. To further strengthen governance and oversight in the sector, he said a dedicated Ministry of Tertiary Education has been established to give colleges and universities the focused attention they require.
The Governor acknowledged that challenges remain but emphasized that deliberate steps are being taken to build a strong educational ladder that future generations can climb to achieve their full potential.
“There is still a lot of work to do, but we are making sure the ladder is there for the next generation to climb,” he said.
The meeting with Westerfield College UK underscores Lagos State’s commitment to fostering strategic partnerships that will enhance educational quality, promote innovation, and prepare students to compete effectively on the global stage.
