The Ogun State Police Command has launched a comprehensive enforcement operation targeting vehicles with illegal number plates, the misuse of dealer (temporary) plates, and the unauthorised use of sirens and amber lights across the state, in a renewed effort to curb crime and enhance public safety.
The Command said the operation, which is intelligence-led, is aimed at identifying and apprehending motorists operating with fake, altered, covered, invalid or improperly affixed registration plates, as well as those unlawfully using dealer plates beyond their approved purposes. According to the police, such practices have increasingly been linked to criminal activities, including robbery, kidnapping and other offences that threaten the safety of residents.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Police explained that suspects apprehended during the exercise would be arrested and prosecuted in line with existing laws, while the operation itself is designed to proactively disrupt criminal networks and improve road safety across Ogun State.
To ensure professionalism, transparency and strict compliance with operational guidelines, specialised units of the Command—including the Motor Traffic Department (MTD), the Monitoring Unit and the X-Squad—have been deployed to provide oversight. Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers are also supervising enforcement activities within their respective jurisdictions to prevent abuse and guarantee fair treatment of all road users.
The Commissioner of Police reiterated the Command’s commitment to lawful policing and urged members of the public to cooperate with officers on duty. He advised motorists to comply fully with traffic and safety regulations, avoid patronising suspicious vehicles, and make use of recognised motor parks and designated pick-up points.
The Police assured residents that the intensified enforcement is not a revenue-driven exercise but a deliberate strategy to prevent crime, maintain public order and protect lives and property, while respecting the rights and dignity of citizens.
