Senator Sunday Marshall Katung, representing Kaduna South Senatorial District, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), in a move he described as essential for delivering "phenomenal and epoch-making development" to his constituents.
In a personally signed statement released on Saturday, the lawyer-turned-lawmaker explained that the decision followed weeks of intensive consultations with stakeholders, family, and supporters.
"This realignment is driven by a genuine desire to serve our people more effectively and ensure that our voices are heard and respected at the highest decision-making tables," Katung wrote.
The defection comes less than 24 hours after a Federal High Court in Abuja issued an injunction halting the PDP's planned 2025 national convention amid escalating internal crises, further weakening the opposition party's cohesion.
Katung, joined by Hon. Daniel Amos and several members of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, praised the APC administrations of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani for demonstrating "special interest" in Southern Kaduna's progress.
He highlighted the party's "developmental footprints" in inclusion, equity, and infrastructure as key factors in his conviction that the APC offers the best platform to end years of perceived marginalization.
"The era of marginalization and exclusion, particularly in our recent past, is being replaced with purposeful governance and partnership," the senator stated, pledging to sustain and expand these gains across the senatorial district.
Acknowledging the personal toll of political shifts, Katung apologized to those he could not consult individually due to the scale of engagement and appealed for continued trust.
Quoting Thomas Jefferson"I never considered a difference of opinion in politics, in religion, or in philosophy as cause for withdrawing from a friend",he urged associates to preserve relationships despite disagreements.
