A new political development has unfolded in Agege Local Government, as Ganiu Obasa, son of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has officially assumed office as the Chairman of Agege Local Government. This comes following the resignation of Hon. Tunde Azeez, popularly known as Disco, who stepped down after just 100 days in office, citing health-related challenges.
Hon. Azeez, who had been on medical leave for several weeks, was succeeded in acting capacity by Ganiu Obasa. His official resignation has now paved the way for Ganiu’s full assumption of office as council chairman, marking a significant shift in the local political landscape Amebo Newspaper NG learnt.
However, the change of leadership has stirred controversy within political circles, with some party insiders alleging that the transition may have been “pre-planned”. Sources revealed that Speaker Obasa had initially sought the party’s nomination for his son to contest the chairmanship seat, but the move was declined. He was said to have later supported his political ally, Tunde Azeez, for the position, while his son Ganiu was nominated as vice chairman.
Barely weeks after Azeez took office, he reportedly proceeded on health leave, leaving Ganiu to act as chairman. His subsequent resignation has fueled speculation that the move was a strategic political arrangement to install the Speaker’s son as substantive chairman.
Meanwhile, several residents of Agege have commended Ganiu Obasa’s performance during his acting tenure, particularly in improving environmental sanitation and promoting a cleaner, more organized community — a sharp contrast, they noted, to the administration of former chairman Alhaji Ganiyu Egunjobi, whom Azeez succeeded.
As Ganiu Obasa officially takes over the reins of leadership, attention now shifts to how he will manage both governance and public perception in a local government long known for its intense political maneuverings.
