The Ogun State Government has issued a critical flood alert urging residents of vulnerable communities to relocate as the overflow of the Ogun River is expected in the coming weeks. The warning, communicated by the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Ola Oresanya, highlights the potential risks associated with heavy rainfall and the controlled release of water from the Oyan Dam.
In a press briefing held in Abeokuta on Monday, Oresanya emphasized the urgency of the situation, offering guidance for residents living in riverbank and wetland areas. The alert covers a wide range of locations that are predicted to be affected, including Akute, Alagbole, Isheri, Magboro, Makogi, Orimerunmu, Iro, and Kajola. Significant parts of Abeokuta, particularly Lafenwa, Enugada, Adedotun, Iberekodo, Akin-Olugbade, and Ago-Odo, are also under imminent threat of flooding.
“As we approach the estimated period of flood risk from October 20 to November 3, it is vital for residents to take this warning seriously and prepare for possible evacuation,” said Oresanya. He underscored that the government is committed to mitigating the impacts of flooding through regular alerts and preparedness strategies.
The anticipated overflow is attributed to heavy rainfall in the northern regions of the country, which is expected to contribute to rising water levels in the Ogun River.
