A wave of sorrow has engulfed Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, following the tragic death of Ajibola Ibitayo, a student in the Department of Dentistry, who reportedly took his own life after struggling with poor academic performance.


Adebayo Idris, President of the Dentistry Students’ Association, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, noting that the tragedy occurred shortly after the announcement of examination results on August 12.


“With profound grief, we mourn the loss of a fellow student in the Faculty of Dentistry,” the statement read. 


“We are heartbroken to learn that he ended his life soon after the release of his exam results. This tragedy underscores the hidden struggles many students face.”


The association expressed deep condolences to Ibitayo’s family, friends, and classmates, emphasizing the need for unity and mental health awareness. 


“This loss is a stark reminder to prioritize mental well-being,” the statement added. 


“We urge everyone to support each other and seek help when needed.”


The university community has been encouraged to come together during this difficult time and promote resources for mental health support.
