Panic gripped commuters along the Itobe–Anyingba Expressway in Kogi State as gunmen abducted nine passengers in a brazen attack on Thursday, August 7, 2025.

The incident, which occurred around 4:20 p.m. near Ogbabo Junction, saw armed assailants emerge from the bush, open fire, and force a Peace Mass Transit bus to a screeching halt, according to security analyst Zagazola Makama.

The bus driver, Mr. Sunday Okechi, and six passengers narrowly escaped the ambush, but nine others were not as fortunate, being herded into the nearby bush by the attackers.

Security forces quickly descended on the scene, where they found the abandoned bus, bearing registration number ENZ-55 XS, alongside a blue Toyota Carina ‘E’.

Both vehicles have been secured by authorities.

A swift response from security operatives, supported by members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria and local hunters, has launched an intensive search-and-rescue operation to locate the abducted passengers and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The incident has heightened fear among residents and travelers, underscoring the persistent security challenges in the region.

Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward as efforts continue to ensure the safe return of the victims.
