In a move aimed at enhancing the welfare of commercial motorcycle (Okada) riders and their passengers, the Chairman of Abeokuta North Local Government, Hon. Lanre Oyegbola-Sodipo, has introduced a pioneering daily health insurance scheme. The initiative, unveiled during a joint press conference with Abeokuta South counterpart, Hon. Afeez Balogun, at the NUJ Secretariat, is designed to provide critical protection for those in the informal sector, who are often the most vulnerable within society.
The new health insurance scheme comes in light of concerns regarding safety, as recent statistics indicate that approximately 45% of road crashes in Ogun State involve motorcycles. Oyegbola-Sodipo emphasized the importance of this scheme, which has already benefited over 2,000 elderly and indigent residents in Abeokuta North and South over the past two years. "Our goal is to establish a profiling system to track Okada riders, ensuring both riders and their passengers are covered in the event of an accident," he said.
This initiative follows some controversy surrounding a decision to suspend commercial motorcycle operations in Abeokuta North due to protests against a new revenue ticket. The leadership of the Riders' Association of Nigeria (RMO) condemned this suspension as “ill-advised and counterproductive,” arguing it unfairly penalizes hardworking riders already struggling in a difficult economic environment. In response, Oyegbola-Sodipo reiterated that the health insurance scheme aligns with Governor Dapo Abiodun’s vision to deepen community welfare initiatives and promises to bring substantial benefits to the riders.
Under the new scheme, riders are required to pay a nominal daily fee, allowing them to access full health coverage even if they only contribute for a single day before an incident occurs. Oyegbola-Sodipo dismissed claims of exploitation, highlighting that this approach provides essential safety net benefits for both the Okada riders and their passengers.
“Who is being exploited here? The riders are the ones doing the job under challenging circumstances, and we are here to offer them a safety net,” he asserted. The Chairman also pointed out the lack of a formal record-keeping system for Okada riders in the state, citing it as a major challenge in addressing issues related to crime and safety.
Moving forward, the health insurance scheme will not only focus on Okada riders but will also extend to market women, traders, and soon, artisans within the local government. "This initiative is part of the dividends of democracy. It is crucial for a metropolis like Abeokuta to embrace the idea of insurance as a safety measure," Oyegbola-Sodipo noted.
In a proactive step, Abeokuta South Local Government is set to launch its own onboarding process for Okada riders into the health insurance program tomorrow, expanding this crucial initiative to more residents.
The introduction of this health insurance scheme marks a significant milestone in supporting informal sector workers and ensuring their safety and welfare, reinforcing the resolve of local government leaders to prioritize the needs of the community they serve.
