Senate President, Godswill Akpabio has cautioned politicians against holding membership in multiple political parties.

His remarks have been interpreted as a subtle criticism of Peter Obi, the Labour Party's 2023 presidential candidate, who recently attended the African Democratic Congress (ADC) summit.

Akpabio emphasized that it is wrong for individuals to claim membership in one party while participating in another party's activities. The Senate President noted that the All Progressives Congress (APC) welcomes defectors, but stressed the importance of a vibrant opposition for a healthy democracy.

“You can’t say you’re a member of ADC, but I still remain a member of the Labour Party. You can’t belong to two political parties. It’s only one party that will contest the election,” Akpabio said.

Akpabio's comments have sparked speculation about Obi's political future, particularly after Obi's appearance at the ADC summit, fueling rumors of a possible alliance.

Akpabio also commended the current House of Representatives for maintaining relative peace compared to past legislative sessions, which were sometimes marred by physical confrontations.
