A devastating fire outbreak occurred on Friday at the popular mobile phone market in Kano, Kano State, resulting in the loss of multi-million naira property.
The fire, which lasted for about six to seven hours, affected over 300 shops in the market, with the area selling mobile phones and phone accessories being the worst hit.
The market chairman, Jamilu Gama, described the loss as huge, with some shops having property worth N500 million to N1 billion completely burnt.
Gama estimated the total loss from the fire to be close to N100 billion.
“There was a huge loss of property and assets. In a single shop, you could find items worth N500 million, and in some cases, up to N1 billion — all completely burnt,” he said.
The cause of the fire remains unknown as of now, according to the market chairman.
The fire outbreak has caused widespread destruction to the market, with many businesses affected.
The loss of property and assets worth billions of naira is likely to have significant economic consequences for the market and the state.
