Messages of solidarity have been pouring in from several Super Eagles stars and the global community to show their support for Taiwo Awoniyi after news broke that he was in an induced coma after undergoing the first phase of an abdominal surgery.
Awoniyi has drawn a lot of attention in the past three days, following Nottingham Forest’s 2-2 draw against Leicester City in the Premier League on Sunday.
Awoniyi did not start, but he was introduced as a late substitute, when the Tricky Trees were desperately in need of a winner.
Unfortunately for Awoniyi, he had a bad collision with the upright while trying to connect with a cross rupturing his intestine in the process.
After Nottingham Forest’s medical team checked him, they gave him the green light to continue. But he was soon forced to leave the game, after experiencing severe pain.
Taiwo Awoniyi underwent surgery today for an abdominal injury suffered after colliding with the post in Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Leicester City.
That situation gained even more traction after Nottingham Forest’s owner, Evangelos Marinakis, who was seen remonstrating to coach Nuno Espirito Santo after the game, confirmed that he was not satisfied with the way the medical team treated Awoniyi’s issue.
After this, news broke on Tuesday afternoon that Awoniyi had been in an induced coma after undergoing surgery to correct a ruptured intestine.
Taiwo Awoniyi has been placed in an induced coma following a ruptured intestine sustained during Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Leicester City. The severity of the complications required immediate surgery.
Following this development, many Nigerian footballers and political figures have come out to show support for the former Union Berlin star.
Galatasaray star Victor Osimhen shared a picture of Awoniyi on Instagram and wrote, “Prayers up for you brother. God will never leave you” he wrote.
This was followed by the captain of the team Ahmed Musa who also shared a picture of Awoniyi and wrote, “Get well soon baller.”
On his part, Peter Obi, the [Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election also sent in a message of solidarity to Awoniyi.
He wrote: “I read with deep concern the unfortunate incident involving our own Taiwo Awoniyi, a resilient son of the soil, who, while giving his best on the field for Nottingham Forest in the English Premier League, suffered a severe injury in the line of duty.
“It is both painful and telling that, even after colliding with the goalpost and sustaining what has now been revealed as a ruptured intestine, he pressed on, a testament to the Nigerian spirit: strong, unyielding, and ever-committed.
“Let us not take this lightly. We must appreciate and celebrate such young men who continue to lift our flag high, even at great personal risk. I call on the authorities, the football community, and indeed all of us as citizens to keep Taiwo in our thoughts and prayers.
“As he lies in an induced coma after emergency surgery, let us stand in solidarity with him and his family. May he recover fully and return stronger. And may we build a country where such sacrifice is not in vain, where patriotism is matched with proper care, recognition, and support. I wish him complete healing. May God Almighty bless Taiwo Awoniyi. God bless the Super Eagles. God bless Nigeria” he wrote.
