Nothing Wrong With One-Party State If Nigerians Want It – Ganduje

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, has said there is nothing inherently wrong with Nigeria becoming a one-party state so long as it reflects the will of the people.

Ganduje made the statement on Friday while speaking to journalists after leading a delegation of three senators from Kebbi State Adamu Aliero, Yahaya Abdullahi, and Garba Maidoki to President Bola Tinubu.

The trio, formerly members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), officially declared their defection to the ruling APC.

Amid rising concerns that such high-profile defections could erode political pluralism, Ganduje defended the trend, citing China’s one-party model as a functional system.

“We came here so that Mr. President can bless this resolution, and Mr. President has graciously blessed this resolution. On Tuesday, I urge you to go and see what will happen in the chambers,” he said, hinting at a formal announcement in the National Assembly.

He further argued that a one-party state should not be viewed as a threat to democracy if it emerges through democratic consensus.

“A one-party state is not by force. It is by negotiation. It’s about others seeing the impact of the APC’s governance and willingly joining us,” Ganduje stated.

He added, “Too many cooks spoil the soup too many political parties spoil governance. China is one of the strongest countries in the world, and it operates a one-party system. We are not advocating for it, but if it becomes the wish of Nigerians, we cannot quarrel with that.”

The APC continues to consolidate its political dominance, with several opposition figures aligning with the ruling party amid internal divisions in rival parties.
