NiMet Issues Weather Alert: Thunderstorms And Dust Haze Expected Across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecasted thunderstorms and dust haze affecting multiple regions of Nigeria from Sunday to Tuesday. In a weather update released on Saturday, NiMet noted, “moderate dust haze will affect Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, Borno, Kano, Yobe, and Jigawa States.”

Adamawa and Taraba are expected to see isolated thunderstorms during this period. The North-Central region should prepare for partly cloudy mornings and afternoon thunderstorms in the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, Kogi, Nasarawa, and Benue.

In the South, morning thunderstorms are anticipated in Lagos, Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom, with more widespread storms later in the day. On Monday, sunny conditions will dominate northern Nigeria except for Taraba and Adamawa, which may experience morning storms spreading to Kaduna, Bauchi, and Gombe.

Thunderstorms will also affect North-Central states including Plateau, Nasarawa, and Benue on Monday. Southern states like Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Edo will likely see morning thunderstorms and further rain later.

By Tuesday, northern states will enjoy mostly sunny weather with some clouds, but Adamawa and Taraba will continue to see morning thunderstorms. Thunderstorms may also occur later in Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba. North-Central mornings will be partly cloudy, with thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening.

NiMet advised caution due to strong winds ahead of thunderstorms and warned northern residents about dust haze. Airline operators were urged to monitor weather updates closely.
