In a significant move aimed at resolving the ongoing leadership crisis within the Labour Party (LP), Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has officially submitted the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the Supreme Court judgment to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The 48-page ruling, which effectively nullified the leadership of Julius Abure as LP National Chairman, has stirred controversy, with Abure maintaining that the judgment did not dissolve his National Working Committee (NWC).
He has also rejected the authority of the Senator Nenadi Esther Usman-led Caretaker Committee, which has since assumed control of the party’s affairs.
INEC confirmed the submission via a statement on its official ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) account, revealing that a high-level delegation from the Labour Party, led by Governor Otti, visited its national headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday to present the document.
“The purpose of the visit,” Otti stated, “was to ensure clarity, alignment, and a shared understanding between the party and INEC regarding the party’s current leadership status.”
The LP delegation was received by INEC Acting Chairman, Mr. Sam Olumekun, alongside other National Commissioners.
Both parties reportedly discussed steps to enhance collaboration and uphold democratic values.
Mr. Olumekun reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to neutrality, transparency, and the rule of law, pledging that the Commission would continue to perform its constitutional responsibilities impartially amidst the LP’s internal restructuring.
This latest development could prove pivotal as the Labour Party seeks stability ahead of future elections and aims to rebuild its ranks under a leadership structure that aligns with judicial rulings and the rule of law.
