End Of The Line: WhatsApp To Stop Working On These Phones From May 5, 2025

Time is ticking for millions of WhatsApp users still clinging to older smartphones.

Starting May 5, 2025, WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business will stop working on several aging phone models, as Meta rolls out its latest system upgrade to enhance security and performance.

This move will primarily affect users running outdated operating systems — particularly those with phones released over a decade ago. Meta insists the decision is necessary to keep WhatsApp fast, safe, and reliable.

WhatsApp will no longer support iOS versions earlier than 15.1. If you’re still using one of the following devices, it’s time to upgrade:

  • iPhone 6
  • iPhone 6 Plus

These models, limited to iOS 12.5.7, can no longer meet WhatsApp’s performance and security requirements.

The ax already fell earlier this year — as of January 1, 2025, WhatsApp ended support for Android 4.4 KitKat and below.

Here are some of the most affected models:

Samsung

  • Galaxy S3
  • Galaxy Note 2
  • Galaxy Ace 3
  • Galaxy S4 Mini

Motorola

  • Moto G (1st Gen)
  • Moto E (2014)
  • Razr HD

HTC

  • One X
  • One X+
  • Desire 500, 601

LG

  • Optimus G
  • G2 Mini
  • L90

Sony

  • Xperia Z
  • Xperia SP
  • Xperia T
  • Xperia V

Google

  • Nexus 4

Users are strongly encouraged to upgrade to newer smartphones that support updated operating systems, or risk losing access to WhatsApp’s messaging, calling, and business tools.
