In a fresh push to resolve the lingering political crisis in Rivers State, suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara has met with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to seek reconciliation.
Our correspondent has reliably gathered that the private meeting took place at Wike’s residence in Abuja, with Fubara arriving in the company of prominent political figures including Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru, and former Ogun Governor Olusegun Osoba.
Upon arrival, sources say Fubara entered Wike’s living room directly—described as “familiar terrain”—and pleaded with the former Rivers governor in a bid to mend fences.
A source close to the matter, who requested anonymity, confirmed the meeting, saying: “There was a meeting and I can confirm that.” However, he did not confirm whether the discussion would lead to an end of the state of emergency declared in Rivers State.
In response to escalating tensions and threats from Niger Delta militants to attack oil facilities in the state, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers.
The president also suspended Fubara, his deputy, and all state lawmakers for six months, appointing a Sole Administrator to oversee governance.
Wike, reacting to the emergency rule, had openly stated his preference for Fubara’s outright removal, but acknowledged that Tinubu’s intervention prevented that outcome.
The high-stakes meeting marks the latest attempt to restore peace and stability in one of Nigeria’s most politically volatile.
