The Nigerian House of Representatives has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to block all pornographic websites in the country.
The lawmakers have instructed the NCC to compel internet service providers to immediately block such content nationwide.
The motion, sponsored by Dalhatu Tafoki, an All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker from Katsina State, highlights the growing global concern over cyber pornography, which Tafoki argues Nigeria has not adequately addressed.
While presenting the motion, Tafoki stressed that Nigeria, being a “highly religious country,” prohibits nudity and obscenity according to its major faiths.
He also pointed to other countries in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East that have enacted laws banning pornography.
The lawmaker further cited warnings from psychologists and sociologists about the detrimental effects of pornography, including its potential to lead to adultery, prostitution, and addiction.
Tafoki emphasized the negative psychological and sociological consequences of consuming such content, urging swift action.
The motion was subjected to a voice vote by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, and was passed with majority support.
The House has also directed the NCC to impose penalties on internet service providers who fail to comply with the directive.
