At least 16 people have been presumed dead, while 3 other persons sustained varying degrees of injuries in a fatal crash that occurred at Buhari Estate, along the Abeokuta-Sagamu Expressway, Abeokuta, Ogun State. The lone crash, which occurred around 1 o'clock in the afternoon on Tuesday, 4th March, 2025, involved a white Mazda bus with registration number KJA949YJ.
The Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Ogun Sector Command, Mr. Akinwumi Fasakin, confirmed the incident in a statement through the Corps' Public Education Officer, Mrs. Florence Okpe. Mr. Fasakin noted that the people involved in the crash were burnt beyond recognition, making it difficult to ascertain their gender, adding that the injured victims had been taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Idi Aba, Abeokuta.
He pointed out that the suspected cause of the crash was a fire outbreak in the vehicle, which was also carrying a filled gas cylinder, leading to the explosion.
Attributing the fatal crash to the carelessness of the driver for agreeing to carry a cylinder filled with gas, the FRSC sector commander said highly flammable items should be transported with care and by designated vehicles driven by trained drivers only.
While sympathizing with the families of the deceased, Mr. Fasakin advised motorists and passengers to put safety first while using the roads.
