In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing the quality of life for residents, the Obafemi Owode Local Government has collaborated with the Guarantee Trust Holding Company (GTCO) and Smart Energy Gas Company to distribute free 3kg gas cylinders to over 3,000 vulnerable women in the council area. This program, which took place recently, is part of a broader strategy to modernize cooking methods and reduce reliance on environmentally harmful practices such as cooking with firewood and charcoal.
The Executive Chairman of Obafemi Owode Local Government, Ambassador Adesina 'Lanre Ogunsola, FCPA, expressed his gratitude to GTCO and Smart Energy for their partnership in addressing the challenges faced by families, particularly women who are often responsible for cooking. "This initiative is not just about giving away gas cylinders; it represents a shift towards a more sustainable and healthier way of cooking," he stated during the distribution event.
Ambassador Ogunsola highlighted that the cylinders were not only distributed free of charge but were also pre-filled with gas, ensuring that recipients could immediately transition to this modern cooking method. He noted that this initiative would extend to villages and various areas across the 12 wards in the local government, aiming to empower more residents with this essential resource.
The chairman commended Ogun State Governor, His Excellency Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, for making Obafemi Owode Local Government the first in the state to benefit from this initiative. He assured residents of the administration's commitment to delivering the dividends of democracy through various empowerment programs.
Mrs. Oyinade Adegbite, representing GTCO, addressed the beneficiaries, urging them to follow safety guidelines for the use of the gas cylinders. "This is a durable and safer option compared to traditional cooking methods," she emphasized. She also hinted at a second phase of the initiative, thanking Ambassador Ogunsola for his robust support that reflects his dedication to improving the welfare of his constituents.
Mr. Temitayo Odeyinka, Director of Admin and Supply at OGEPA, who represented Hon. Akintunde Faruq, Special Adviser to the Governor, echoed the gratitude towards Governor Abiodun for approving the project. He encouraged residents to take full advantage of the opportunity and to continue supporting the government at all levels.
His Royal Highness, Oba Kolawole Aremu Sowemimo, Olu of Owode, expressed his appreciation to the Governor for his foresight in selecting Obafemi Owode as the first local government to benefit from this initiative. He stated, "This program marks a significant milestone for our community."
Alhaja Ganiyat Ogunleye, the Iyaloja General of Obafemi Owode Local Government, also commended the initiative, describing it as unprecedented in the council's history. She extended her prayers for the continued success of Ambassador Ogunsola's administration and its commitment to community development.
The event saw the presence of significant dignitaries, including the Vice Chairman, Hon. Abiodun Sobukonla, S.L.G. Hon. Kayode Dipeolu, Leader of the House Hon. Ariyibi Saheed, HOLGA Ms. Olufunke Adeniji, and all councilors, among others.
This initiative marks a significant step towards improving the living conditions of residents in Obafemi Owode, promoting a cleaner and safer environment, and empowering women in their households. With the ongoing support from GTCO and Smart Energy, the council aims to continue its efforts in elevating the standard of living for all its residents.
