A Nigerian woman identified as Oyindamola Akinyera has given birth aboard a flight to Brazil.
In a lengthy post via her Instagram page, the woman revealed that she and her partner were on a trip to Brazil for their “honeymoon and babymoon” when she unexpectedly began having contractions midair.
She also narrated how the hostesses became her “personal midwives” and a doctor onboard identified as Carolina helped in the process.
Akinyera said she welcomed her baby girl 20 minutes before the plane landed. She added that upon arriving in Brazil, she headed straight to the hospital “where our beautiful baby girl and I are doing great.”
“The pains kept waking me up and the Qatar airways hostess (my personal midwives) sprung into action. They set up a whole birthing station for me at the entrance of the plane,” the post reads in part.
“Everything was happening so fast and all I was thinking is that I have to hold on till we land to have this baby.
“They asked if there was any doctor on board and a doctor called Carolina walked up to us and is like “I deliver babies”. She checks me, tells me I’m fully dilated and the baby is ready to come. At this point, we’re in Brazilian airspace and about 40 mins from landing.
“… Midway, I got tired and tell them I can’t do it anymore and my God sent Qatar airways crew aka midwives prayed over me to keep going.
“20 mins before landing, God blessed us with the most precious baby girl. We landed in Brazil safely and headed straight to the hospital where our beautiful baby girl and I are doing great.”
Oyindamola’s childbirth aboard a flight underscores the critical need for aircraft to be equipped with comprehensive medical facilities and trained personnel to handle unexpected emergencies.
Oyindamola and David, her husband, tied the knot in 2023.
