We will continue to support Nigeria's education sector - Chinese Consul- General


For improved standard of education in Nigeria, the People's Republic of China has pledged to continue to support the Federal government.


The Chinese Consul- General, Lagos, Yan Yuqing made the assurance during the commissioning of renovated China-Nigeria Friendship Model Primary School, Igbesa, Ogun State.

She said China admired that education is the foundation of national development, hence the need to support the country.

Yuqing noted that education is a powerful tool to eliminate poverty and promote social and economic development, revealing that in 2011, China made nine-year compulsory education universal and eliminated illiteracy among young and middle-aged people. 

She said that all modern countries in the world do not fail to attach importance to education, saying China has made remarkable achievements due to priority it placed on science and education. 

Her words: "Chinese admire that education is the foundation of national development in the long run. All modern countries in the world do not fail to attach importance to education. As the largest developing country in the world, China has made remarkable achievements in all aspects of social development. 

These achievements are inseparable from our unswerving implementation of the strategy of invigorating China through science and education. And we always place education in a strategic position of priority development. We will continue to support Nigeria's education system in all areas".


She stated "Education is a powerful tool to eliminate poverty and promote social and economic development. In 2011, China made nine-year compulsory education universal and eliminated illiteracy among young and middle-aged people. 


In less than ten years, China lifted all rural poor out of poverty and eliminated absolute poverty historically. Presently, the popularity of education at all levels in China has reached or exceeded the average level of middle- and high-income countries, among which preschool education and compulsory education have reached the average level of high-income countries in the world, and higher education has entered the stage of universalization". 


"With the development of education and other aspects, we have comprehensively built a moderately prosperous society," she stated 

Speaking on the project, which was jointly funded between the Consulate and Ogun Guangdong Free Trade Zone, Yuqing said it has become a bridge of friendship and understanding between Nigeria and China, insisting that Nigeria has witnessed sincere friendship from China. 

She added, "Eleven years ago, the construction of this school began. Since then, this school has become a bridge of friendship and understanding between Nigeria and China and it has witnessed sincere friendship from China. 


Today, you can see here, the classrooms are more spacious, the campus is more beautiful, and the facilities are more complete. I hope that all the children will study harder in these improved classrooms and strive towards achieving their goals as soon as possible".


While advising the pupils, the Consul- General, stated "Children, Education is related to the future of a country, now you are the future of Nigeria! Work hard and fight for a better tomorrow for the prosperity of Nigeria!".

The Deputy - General, China -Africa Investment, Kevin Liu, said China-Nigeria Model School, stands for knowledge, cultural exchange, and mutual understanding, saying "These values promote global peace and cooperation and we are committed to maintaining this standard for generations to come".


The State Governor, Dapo Abiodun commended the Chinese Consulate and Ogun - Guangdong Free Trade Zone for the project.

Abiodun who was represented by  Commissioner-designate, Mr. Sesan Fagbayi, disclosed that the project would foster smooth bilateral relationship with the Chinese government. 

He however appealed to the residents of Igbesa to cooperate with the Chinese investors for peace and friendly environment in order for their businesses to thrive.

The Oloja-Ekun of Igbesaland, Oba Oluwatoyin Akinde lauded the Chinese Consulate and Ogun - Guangdong Free Trade Zone for the project.

He ,however, urged his subjects and residents of the town to ensure proper maintenance of the edifice.

The Monarch represented by one of his Chiefs, Otunba Ade Durojaiye, also urged Chinese government to establish Model school for the town as well as teaching of Chinese in the primary school.

Chinese Consulate and Ogun - Guangdong Free Trade Zone built a block of classroom, cafeteria as well as donation of educational materials to the pupils.
